[Inspired by Half Moon Run’s “Throes”:]

It was perfect, crystalline – yet

not, of course; very real in its

diamond state.  No impurities

for his Angel.

He could already see it

adorning her hand, fingers

stroking his skin

like she used to.

Unbreakable –

this rock, her (used

to have to be,

for him).

How he missed her…

Climbing the stairs,

his heartbeat pulsed

stronger than he felt.

This, his last hope.

What if she said no?

The question, like the door

gaping blackly back at him,

hung unanswered, yet

full of meaning.

The ring clattered to the floor.
